MPAA Rating: PG-13 (for some sexual references)
Rating: Recommendable for when you are in the right mood.
After being locked in the house for two weeks due to illness, Mark and I decided to get out and see a movie. The choices were between Vantage Point and Be Kind Rewind. After much debate we chose Be Kind Rewind because we were in the mood for a situational comedy like Napoleon Dynamite. Be Kind Rewind suprised me.
The movie starts out with Jerry (Jack Black) a junkyard worker who attempts to sabotage a power plant he suspects of causing his headaches. But he inadvertently causes his brain to become magnetized, leading to the unintentional destruction of all the movies in Mr. Fletcher's (Danny Glover) store. In order to keep the store's one loyal customer, an elderly lady with a tenuous grasp on reality, Jerry and Mike (Mos Def) re-create a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Ghostbusters, When We Were Kings, Driving Miss Daisy, and Robocop, putting themselves and their townspeople into it. They become the biggest stars in their neighborhood. (Source: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0799934/plotsummary) However, the FBI busts them for copyright infringement and all the "sweded" movies are destroyed. Mr. Fletcher is notified that if he doesn't make neccessary upgrades to the building it will be destroyed for a new downtown improvement. The townspeople make one last movie about the life of Fats Waller the towns famous jazz player. It becomes a huge success.
The reason why I rate this recommendable when you are in the right mood is because you need to be ready to laugh. Jerry and Mike are hilarious while they are filming the movies. It reminded me of movies my friends and I would make back in high school. You just film it straight through and do not edit.
This is a movie where you need to be willing to leave all belief at the door. If you come to this movie expecting it to be serious you will be disappointed. I came into this movie thinking it would be like Napoleon Dynamite, however, it was more serious. It has the elements of humor that you would find in a Jack Black comedy, but it also has the seriousness of Dreamgirls.
